  7.     Judging a phone book by its cover has become a popular
  8. pastime among residents of the British city of Bradford. The
  9. phone company asked DAVID HOCKNEY, a native son who now lives
  10. in Los Angeles, to paint his hometown and the greeny Yorkshire
  11. countryside for its directory. Hockney, whose works can sell
  12. for more than $2 million, did it for free. Though orders for
  13. the directory are pouring in -- one Londoner bought 500 copies
  14. -- many Bradfordians are less than appreciative of the art.
  15. Among their epithets: "childish" and "monstrous."
